Join passementier Elizabeth Ashdown for a three-day tassel making masterclass in Lingfield, Surrey.
Passementerie, the art of tassels, cords, fringes and braids, once adorned royal palaces and is now on the Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts. Inspired by the exquisite tassels of Marie Antoinette's boudoir at Versailles, you'll learn techniques that have barely changed in centuries and take home your own finished, contemporary tassel: true jewellery for the home, perfect for curtains, door handles or any space that deserves a touch of elegance.
Some of the tassels pictured were made by my wonderful students in previous classes. Just look what you could create!
This is a rare opportunity to learn from a master craftsperson dedicated to preserving techniques that are rapidly disappearing from our cultural heritage. Elizabeth’s expertise in breathing new life into historical methods ensures you’ll not only learn traditional skills but understand how to apply them in contemporary contexts.
‘I wanted to express my joy that attending your course gave me. Your passion for Passementerie clearly shows. You made the lessons so interactive that I looked forward to each day of your articulate teaching, your patience with the group was outstanding and most appreciated. I do hope you will be back soon so I can expand my Passementerie skills.’ Trish, Cotswold Textile Workshops, 2026.

Elizabeth is one of only three hand passementerie designers and makers still working in the UK. She holds an MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art, is a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust scholar and Heritage Crafts Endangered Crafts Fund award winner, and has published a book with Schiffer Craft. She has over 11 years of teaching experience and she teaches at the Royal School of Needlework, Hand & Lock, Central Saint Martins and Au Ver à Soie in Paris. She is known for reinventing endangered techniques into contemporary objects.

Working with colour is a key focus of this masterclass. You'll choose your own colour palette from a curated selection of beautiful, high-quality fine cotton yarns. Whether you're drawn to the rich tones of Versailles or contemporary shades to suit a modern interior, your tassel will be unique to you. If you'd like your tassel to match a particular room, you're very welcome to bring fabric swatches from home.
You'll work with traditional passementerie equipment and materials, including turned wooden moulds. All materials and tools are included in the ticket price.

Yes. The venue is fully accessible, and the teaching room is on the ground floor. We'll be working in a large, bright, comfortable room, with a separate lounge room for tea, coffee and cake. There is a free, on-site car park with a limited number of parking spaces. There is a large, paid car park a 4 minute walk away.
Tassel making is a lovely mix of patient table work and more active making. Much of the class is spent seated, working on fine detail that calls for nimble fingers and good dexterity. Cord spinning is more physical: it uses hand-held equipment and involves standing, bending and walking as the threads twist together.
